Al Iafrate Coming to Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament Announcement

The YMCA of Eastern Ontario and the United Way of Leeds and Grenville are delighted to announce that Al Iafrate, former defenceman with the Toronto Maple Leafs will be attending the Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament.

Nicknamed “The Planet,” Al Iafrate was a fast-skating defenseman from Michigan who went straight from junior hockey to the 1984 U.S. Olympic team in Sarajevo before beginning his 14-year, 799-game career in the NHL. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the 1984 NHL entry draft where he played for seven seasons followed by four years with the Washington Capitals, one with the Boston Bruins and two with the San Jose Sharks. Al was named to four NHL All-Star Games and to the second-team All-NHL in 1993. He was known for skating speed and a rocket-like shot – clocked at a record-setting 169.3 km/h (105.2 mph) – a record that stood until 2009. During Al’s final NHL season, he represented the U.S. at the 1998 World Championships.

A hearty thanks to Al for contributing his efforts to our fundraiser in support of people in our regions!
