About the YMCA
The YMCA is one of Canada’s oldest and largest charities with a presence in Canada since 1851 and serving more than 2.25 million people each year across 1,700 program locations.
The YMCA story began in London, England more than 170 years ago with George Williams who had an idea about how to make his community stronger. From that idea, sprang a movement that would spread across the globe, inspiring millions to grow in spirit, mind and body. Throughout the years, we’ve evolved with the times, from the Industrial Revolution to the Digital Revolution and made many important contributions to society along the way.
Why the Y Matters
At the YMCA, we’re driven by our vision of a healthier Canada, and we’re inspired by the achievements of the millions of people we support every year on their journey towards better health and wellness.
The social determinants of health, identified by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), show that being physically fit is only one part of having an active, healthy life.
There are many factors affecting the health of Canadians, ranging from your job, to where you live, to your networks, including income and social status, social support networks, education, employment/working conditions, social environments, physical environments, personal health practices and coping skills, healthy child development, gender and culture.
That’s why we work hard every day to make a tangible difference in people’s lives and the communities they live in by addressing many of these issues. We offer programs and services to more than two million people every year, in more than 1,700 locations.
Building a Healthier Canada
We offer programs that help Canadians become more physically fit, better connected to their communities, and equipped with the skills needed to achieve success in work and life.
The YMCA is a charity that provides vital community services that are having a positive impact on some of Canada’s most pressing social issues—from chronic disease to social isolation, poverty, inequality and more.
Central to our success are:
- The people who unite behind our mission and bring their many talents to our work
- The safe and welcoming places we provide—from health facilities to classrooms—that foster a sense of community
- The comprehensive community-based programs that provide the extra skills, opportunities and confidence that many individuals and families need to achieve their full potential
- Our advocacy for health, promoting public policy that fosters a sense of belonging
- The philosophy that guides our actions, a holistic approach based on the building blocks of the social determinants of health, harm reduction, the stages of change and developmental-appropriateness
The three critical resources—people, places and programs—come together at the YMCA to create a sense of belonging to a supportive network that has proven time and time again to help our members and program participants achieve their personal development goals, be they physical, mental, social and/or emotional.
For some, the impact can be truly transformational and can have an enormous ripple effect on those around them. While we celebrate each of these personal achievements—it is the scale at which this happens that makes Canada’s YMCAs unique. Ys serve approximately 2.25 million Canadians in communities from coast-to-coast. This broad reach and our 160-year history are all part of the broader story of how we are building healthy communities.
